Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9 NIV).
Many people have asked while traveling and sharing during home assignment whether we feel safe serving in area of the world that can be dangerous or hostile at times. It is true that we face risk. I believe anyone who seeks to follow God’s will wholeheartedly will face risk. So what keeps us going? This simple truth: God will not send you where God’s grace cannot keep you.
Let’s face it, sometimes God asks you to do hard things. He asked Joshua to lead the people of Israel into the Promise Land after the death of Moses. This would not be an easy task (or a safe task). It meant crossing the Jordan River at flood stage. It meant engaging in war and conflict with the rebellious and godless people of Canaan. Yet, God’s promise was sure. Joshua did not need to fear or be discouraged by the challenge, God would be with Joshua and the people of God wherever God had commanded them to go.
We have found this to be true, serving in the area of the world where we serve. We serve because God called and commanded. We believe God’s words to Joshua are true for us also. God’s grace will be with us wherever God leads us and no matter what God asks us to do.
Is God asking you to do hard things? Do they seem risky, overwhelming, or impossible? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged. The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. God’s grace will be sufficient for whatever God asks you to do, even the hard things. Has God not commanded you?
